##Introduction:## Avatar isn't your average animated movie. Its 3D animation is jaw-dropping and its story line is both heart-touching and thrilling. The film follows the life of Jake Sully, a paraplegic U.S. Marine who flies in to Pandora - a moon in the Alpha Centauri system to investigate human colonization possibilities with two scientists from Earth (Dylan and Dr. Lyle (Christine Woods). Soon they discover a horrifying secret that could not only change their lives but those of the entire galaxy. The movie is the first film from director James Cameron, who took over from Tim Burton as director after Burton's departure from Batman, and was released on December 18, 2009. As of February 2010, the movie is the highest-grossing film in its release year (closing February 24, 2010). It has grossed $633 million worldwide (in 2D and 3D formats). Avatar was released on Blu-ray - AVC-1 widescreen format - Region A (US/Canada) on June 6, 2010. The DVD was also released in a 2D widescreen format - Region A. A 3D Blu-ray player is needed to enjoy the 3-D effects in a 3D TV. The movie has been seen by over 89 million people at its premiere screenings and is the highest grossing movie of all time, surpassing Cameron's previous movie Titanic (1997), which grossed $600 million worldwide. Avatar also holds the record for the highest grossing opening weekend for an R-rated film, taking $73,025,481 during its opening weekend (December 17–19), beating The Matrix Reloaded's record of $91.8 million. The film has been rated PG-13 for intense sequences of science-fiction violence and warfare, and for some language. Cameron said at a 3D show that "Avatar" is the world's first live-action movie to be converted to 3D, after doing test shots with a variety of other films. The film was converted by Cameron himself using the same system he used for "Titanic", which he had originally developed as far back as 1992 during the production of "True Lies". The commercial appeal of Avatar lies in its use of 3D technology as opposed to being all CGI animation. Avatar received mainly positive reviews from the public. On the review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, which has a 71% approval rating based on 238 reviews, with an average score of 7.2 out of 10. The critics' consensus reads "It may represent too much of a leap into the unknown for some viewers -- and there are at least a few sequences that slow the film's pace and feel superfluous -- but overall Avatar delivers stunning visuals and a storyline worthy of its expansive, imagination-grabbing universe". cfa1e77820
